  • America Ripe for Anti-Christ

The world is ripe for the Antichrist, even many of those who would call themselves brethren have been subdued to believe a lie. The students of prophecy know that before Christ will appear on earth, Antichrist will appear. He will be one of the Roman Emperors revived (2 Thessalonians 2; Daniel 2:40-44; Daniel 7:23-24).

"Our nation is based on the ideal of local self-rule...We have to admit that the recent tendency is contrary to this spirit. Individuals are no longer building their own freedom through self-rule and labor...but have committed the responsibility of prosperity and moral virtue to the intoxicating influence that pervades society. In the same way, the local governments are looking to the state governments, and the state governments are looking to the national government, while the national governments are looking to a nebulous organization, a flimsy union to pay their debts and to tell them what they should do. This is not self-rule...If we allow others to help us, we cannot stop others from controlling us. If we are too weak to uphold our own morality, we will not be strong enough to uphold our freedom. If we cannot rule ourselves, if we cannot abide by the law, there will be no way except for others to control us, to subjugate us under the law, and to lower our noble and free position to that of a shameful slave." Calvin Coolidge, May 30, 1925. One might think that this was a modern day commentary!

Recently, a manuscript page was discovered under a sofa in an old autograph album in a house in Suffolk, a county in eastern England, by auctioneers who came to value the contents after the owner died. It read in part, “until the people of America shall have lost all virtue: until they shall have become totally insensible to the difference between freedom and slavery: until they shall have been reduced to such poverty of spirit as to be willing to sell that preeminent blessing, the birthright of a freeman, for a mess of pottage: in short, until they have been found incapable of governing themselves and ripe for a master…”

This was the last page of George Washington’s speech, handwritten by the first president himself. Washington had handwritten 60 pages intended to be delivered at his inauguration in New York City, April 30, 1789. During the last century, each page of the discourse was sold to autograph hunters in America and Europe – a common practice in the 19th century.

Unfortunately, most Americans have lost the virtue that once made us a great nation! Today, one-third of all births are illegitimate. Couples think nothing of living together out of wedlock – products of a corrupt school system that actively discourages moral values taught in the Bible. God, holy living, and prayer are not only unwelcome, but also despised in classrooms. Everyone does what seems to be right in their own eyes. This scourge upon America is ripe for God’s judgment.

Secondly, Washington warned that America would be ripe for an national takeover. Washington’s statement concerned the right of citizens to live freely – unencumbered by a dictatorial government. Our forefathers formed a government that was deliberately kept at arms-length from interfering in the lives of its citizens. There was no “federal bureaucracy” back then, only a “national government.” The states were sovereign. There were no direct taxes of any kind – no sales tax or income tax. The national government was funded by the states. Today, however, states’ rights have eroded in favor of a power-hungry federal bureaucracy. We have become virtual slaves to an ever-growing bureaucracy – just as George Washington predicted.

Washington knew his Bible. He quotes here from the story of Jacob and Esau. For the desire of free food, the liberal-minded Esau threw all caution to the wind and was willing to give up the future of his posterity. He had no forethought for the generations that would come from him, he cared not for their future, he thought only for himself at the moment. George Washington drew an analogy from this story and warned that someday Americans would be willing to throw away their future for a mess of government pottage. When our government established Social Security, they promised a retirement plan for the elderly without thinking what it would cost future generations. At the same time, instead of planning to take care of themselves, laxidasical citizens like the idea of letting the government feed, clothe and house them in their old age.

Finally, Washington warned that America would be ripe for a world dictator when “…they have been found incapable of governing themselves.” When the voter no longer informs himself about the facts – but follows the piped piper with the finest musical score which motivates the voter by emotional fervor only, our nation is ready for a dictator. Hence, the world is ripe for Antichrist to execute his autocratic regime.

The term “the antichrist” refers not only to an individual, but to ALL who are antichrist. All who are part of any religion of man, and all who openly oppose the Christ or God or both. "Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son" 1 John 2:22. While standing on the watchtower of prophecy, we can see that mankind is becoming more and more lawless, until the day the lawless one appears, when they will all be subject under his hand.

The Bible clearly describes a coming world ruler who will make all others that have come before him pale in comparison. The traditional name given him is Antichrist, with the name coming from the Apostle John: "Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour" (1 John 2:18). Regarding when the Antichrist will be made known, the Apostle Paul writes that the coming tribulation period spoken about in the Bible (cf. Daniel 9; Matthew 24; Revelation 4–18) will not come about until the Antichrist is revealed.
