  • Two Births and Two Deaths

The Bible teaches that there are actually two deaths. One is a physical death, the other is spiritual death. The Bible says that when we die physically, the immaterial part of us (our soul/spirit) is separated from our material part (the body). Our immaterial part is also separated from this world. So separation is the essence of death. Jesus warned we are to fear the second death more than the first death. There are also two births.

The first birth is our physical birth. In the Bible Jesus mentions a second birth while talking with a Jewish teacher. He said in John 3:3-5, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” This confused the Jewish teacher, so he asked, “How can a man be born when he is old?” Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.” Being born of water is our physical birth. Being born of the Spirit is spiritual birth.

Here's the good news, if you are born once you will die twice, but if you are born twice you will die once... meaning if you are born physically you are going to die physically and then you are going to have that second death, you are going to die spiritually, separated from God. But if you are born twice, physically and then you are born again by believing in Jesus you will only die once, only physically because then you will go to heaven. That is why Jesus said, 'You must be born again.'

Spiritual death involves being separated from God’s domain, (i.e., heaven). The Bible says there will come a time when everyone will stand before God to be judged: “The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” (Rev. 20:13) The fire was never intended for humans, but only Lucifer and his fallen minions. But after the fall of mankind, those who remain separated in spiritual darkness too will suffer the same eternal fate of evil.

If a person is thrown into the lake of fire, that person is separated forever from God’s presence (heaven), and the Bible calls that ”the second death.” The first death is separation from this present world. The second death is separation from God’s world (heaven). Our first death is physical death, which is separation from this world. Our second death is spiritual death—separation from God’s world. However, the second death can be avoided.

Medical science seeks to add years to your life, but only Christ can add life to your years, and eternal life to your soul. And he will give you a life that is worth living because it is full and meaningful.
